Counselling

Life throws us hurdles…

and sometimes we need help to get over them.
Everybody faces problems — and it's OK not to have ready-made answers in your own toolbox. It's OK to ask a counsellor to help you find the answers.

We are all 'damaged' simply from being alive…

and somehow, being human involves us in learning to repair the damage we collect along the way so we can live more comfortably. Read the list below to see how some of this damage happens.

  • I was born into a poor family with ten kids.
  • I can't say no because I don't want to offend people.
  • My mother died when I was a child.
  • I went to boarding school.
  • I had asthma often as a child and missed out on a lot of school.
  • My uncle raped me.
  • I could never relate to my father.
  • My brothers are both doctors and I'm only a labourer.
  • I'm the 'black sheep' of the family.
  • I've always wondered if I am gay.
  • I was brought up in a religious family and I suffer from guilt about everything.
  • My father is an alcoholic.
  • I was the second child in our family.
  • I was violently assaulted and robbed last week.

Counselling…

helps you find the answers to solve problems. Counsellors have big ears and little mouths. Counsellors are skilled to listen and reflect back what you say in different ways. Through talking to another person about the things that concern you, you can reveal to yourself what the problem is really about. This works best when the person you are talking to has no emotional involvement in your problems — counselling with family and friends often confuses facts with feelings, whereas a counsellor can stand outside your words and make objective observations about the things you say.

Life Coaching…

gives you the techniques and skills to live better. Life coaches have bigger mouths than counsellors. You draw on their life experience and their role is to teach you HOW TO skills.

Maybe you need a coach to help you learn HOW TO -

  • be more assertive
  • be a better time manager
  • be a better friend
  • meet people
  • get your life in order
  • make your wedding plans
  • prepare for a career change
  • manage your stress
  • do better at job interviews

Counselling vs Life Coaching …

For many of my clients there is a combination of both needed. Once you as the client have identified a problem, and maybe even an answer, we can then work together as a team to work toward the goal of feeling better about yourself.
